Huge glacier melt could cause 20 inch rise in global sea levels

In the last six years, five closely observed Antarctic glaciers have doubled their rate of ice loss, according to the National Science Foundation.

Now, researchers have been working on a new study which reports that over the past six years, the rate at which the five Antarctic glaciers have melted has doubled. The warm air and water is what's causing ice sheets and glaciers to melt at unprecedented rates. Ice flow simulations However, researchers from the Georgia Institute of Technology, NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and the University of Washington have factored the instability into 500 ice flow simulations for Thwaites with refined calculations, according to Phys.org.

What sounds even more awful is that even if climate change declined and global warming stopped at some point, the glacier would remain unstable and would push ice into the sea at an accelerated rate in the coming centuries.

Thwaites glacier is now so unstable that it is all but inevitable it will melt into the ocean, raising sea levels by a staggering 20 inches.

The results showed the glacier was more in danger of becoming unstable that previously thought.

NASA JPL scientist Helene Seroussi, who worked on the study along with Robel, said that the glacier could lose all of its ice over the next 150 years.

That ice loss is part of a broader trend: The entire Antarctic ice sheet is melting almost six times as fast as it did 40 years ago.

When this happens, it would be impossible to stop it from flowing into the ocean, which could trigger a significant rise in sea levels. "It will keep going by itself, and that's the worry", said lead author Alex Robel, an assistant professor in Georgia Tech's School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences.

Together with Greenland's ice sheet, Antarctica's ice sheet contains more than 99 percent of the world's fresh water. "That would make for a sea level rise of about half a meter, or 1.64 feet".

He said: "If you trigger this instability, you don't need to continue to force the ice sheet by cranking up temperatures".

As the ice melts and crumbles into the oceans, the amount of present water pushes up on coastal areas, threatening floods around the globe.

The line between where the ice sheet rests on the seafloor and where it extends over water is called the grounding line.

Earlier this year, NASA added fuel to the fire by discovering a huge void lurking beneath Thwaites Glacier. "The process becomes self-perpetuating". The findings are particularly worrying as the success of current efforts to proof cities and installations against sea level rise are wholly dependent on having accurate predictions.

Most of that water is frozen in masses of ice and snow that can be up to 10,000 feet (3 kilometres) thick.

Unlike the melting of ice sheets on land, sea ice melting does not raise sea levels but the loss of the reflective white ice leads to more of the sun's heat being absorbed in the ocean, increasing the pace of heating. So some other scientists think that if the entire Thwaites glacier were to collapse, it could destabilize surrounding glaciers on the Antarctic ice sheet as well.
