Chargers’ Gordon could skip camp, demand trade without new contract

The talk of the offseason for the Los Angeles Chargers has been running back Melvin Gordon and a possible contract extension.

But with training camp just weeks away, the Chargers running back has informed the team that unless he gets a new deal he won't report and will demand to be traded, his agent Fletcher Smith told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Smith told Schefter that he and Gordon didn't want to take a hard-line stance, but because of the lack of progress in negotiations they have made a decision to go public with their displeasure.

Gordon, who was the 15th overall draft pick in the 2015 draft, is set to earn $5.6 million in 2019 on the fifth-year option of his rookie contract, which the Chargers picked up last year.

Chargers training camp is slated to begin July 24.

Gordon previously expressed concern during a mandatory June minicamp that he hadn't yet gotten a new contract completed. "We're talking right now, and that's kind of where I'm going to leave it". He also added 50 catches for 490 receiving yards and another 4 touchdowns through the air. Last year, Gordon missed four games with an injured knee, but when he was playing he averaged over five yards per carry. Gordon wouldn't be the first player in National Football League history to hold out or demand a trade, nor will he be the last. If it's going to happen, it'll happen.
