Mozilla CEO: Premium version of Firefox coming this fall

Firefox could go Premium in the coming months confirmed Chris Beard Firefox could go Premium in the coming months

It appears there will be two option for Firefox users: pay nothing and get some VPN bandwidth, while those who want more can pay extra.

Things haven't been ironed out yet, but Beard suggested that some of these additional features will be access to a VPN service and a secure storage space. It teamed up with ProtonVPN and offered a $10 subscription to Firefox users.

Since Firefox is completely free, Mozilla's main source of revenue consists of various search deals.

Mozilla plans to launch a "premium" version of Firefox with a built-in VPN, secure cloud storage, and more. It's still unclear if there will be only one subscription service encompassing all the premium features, or of each feature will be a separate subscription. Is there any other premium service that Mozilla should consider adding to its flagship product? A Firefox spokesperson told T3N that they would first start by introducing individual services and then decide which model works best for them. But the fox doesn't stand alone: The branding system also includes logos for Firefox Lockwise, Firefox Send, and Firefox Monitor, all of which elevate simple line drawings that recall what each service does using bright, colorful gradients of orange, yellow, pink, blue, and purple.

Firefox Premium (or whatever it ends up being called) would not affect the functionality of the free Firefox browser, but would instead offer additional functionality that we are, perhaps, now getting elsewhere. That means Mozilla will continue to offer the same features as part of Firefox, and only introduce new premium tiers that users can access with the new subscription, without affecting the existing, free users of the browser.

With the above changes at the forefront of its strategy Mozilla has just completed a rebranding operation.

The new browser will arrive this fall and will require a subscription.
