Live updates of the countdown and launch of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida with 60 satellites for SpaceX's Starlink broadband network.

Starlink is created to provide high-speed Internet access to areas of the planet where broadband is rare, spotty or non-existent. The project is expected to be completed by 2027 and will consist which is almost 12,000 satellites - six times the number of all operational spacecraft now in orbit. In February, satellites built by Airbus SE and partner OneWeb blasted off from French Guiana, the first step in a similar plan to give millions of people in remote and rural areas high-speed internet from space. The final Starlink constellation is planned to have around 12,000 satellites total. All the preparations and checks have been finished, the launch is scheduled for tomorrow, May 15.

Elon Musk is a busy person, and the most recent project on his plate includes launching 60 satellites into space. While Wednesday's satellites will be nearly fully functional, Shotwell said the launch is really meant to test out how the large bank of satellites can be safely deployed into orbit - that is, without colliding with each other or winding up at the wrong altitude.

The Kessler effect talks about two satellites colliding in orbit, and that then kick-starting other collisions in space, and leading to ever-more debris in space. SpaceX confirmed the completion of the static hearth take a look at Monday evening, setting the stage for liftoff of the Falcon 9 rocket throughout a 90-minute window opening at 10:30 p.m. EDT Wednesday (0230 GMT Thursday) from Cape Canaveral's Complicated 40 launch pad.

All up, SpaceX plans to launch 4,000 satellites into its orbiting "mega-constellation".

Here's how the ambitious Starlink project would work. This was reported by Musk on Twitter.

In a conference call Wednesday, Musk said the satellites will deploy within an hour after launch, most likely over Tasmania.

Elon Musk does not only sell expensive fancy cars.

SpaceX will need another six missions, he said, before Starlink can provide consistent internet coverage for small parts of the world.

Completing the project may cost $10 billion or more, according to Gwynne Shotwell, the president and chief operating officer of SpaceX.

Musk said Starlink user terminals will also use phased array, electronically steered antennas - a technology widely considered essential for the success of low-Earth-orbit broadband constellations.
