A 2-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield - secured through a Sadio Mane double - lifted the Reds up to a final total of 97 points but they finished one behind Manchester City in the table.

Even if they fall short on Sunday they have the chance to become champions of Europe for a sixth time if they beat fellow Premier League club Tottenham in Madrid on June 1.

"Turning a 25-point deficit into just a one-point deficit in the space of one season is an incredible achievement". City got the points they have because we were there.

The ex-England global told the Mirror : "I don't buy into the theory that Liverpool will automatically be Manchester City's main challengers next season just because they ran them so close this time".

"If we're ready to make the next step we'll make that next step".

Maurizio Sarri has admitted that he feels "really sorry" for Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool FC after they missed out on the Premier League title this season.

Klopp said: "Congratulations to Manchester City". Always after a good year we lost key players [in the past] but we won't [this time] so we'll be there again.

"As long as City are around, with the quality and financial power, it's not easy that any other team will pass them".

But Man City retained the Premier League title with a solitary point more. From what I saw in the training sessions, they want to win it, knowing that we can lose it.

"This team is one of the best that ever played for Liverpool, 100 percent, but we play in a league with other very good teams - that is what we must accept and we do accept, no problem". That is the competition we are in.

Klopp said: "We have qualified for the Champions League final".

The club endured such dark days towards the start of this decade but the good times are well and truly back at Anfield. If we do those same steps again that will be a season. We were really good until 1-0, what happened then was clear.

To underline the two clubs´ dominance, third-placed Chelsea only have 71 points going into their final game against Leicester City. We gave everything over the whole season, City are a fantastic side and you take your hats off to them.

There was hope among the home fans when news of City conceding early arrived shortly after Mane had put the Reds in front, but the moment the champions moved ahead before the break, Liverpool looked resigned to their disappointment. We're thinking about the next game on Saturday.
