WhatsApp will stop working on Windows phones later this year

WhatsApp UWP said to be in the works WhatsApp will stop working on Windows phones later this year
Melba Vasquez | 11 May, 2019, 11:05

The statement follows Microsoft's decision to end support for the software from December the same year, advising people to buy iOS or Android devices.

WhatsApp is working on a new Universal Windows Platform (UWP) app for Windows 10, according to a tweet published by WABetaInfo. WhatsApp in the blog post also warned users that some of the social-messaging app's platform may stop working on Windows devices. However, since WhatsApp won't be developing for these operating systems anymore, some features that are now available might stop working even before the deadline, so you might want to switch to a newer device if you want to continue to use WhatsApp. Microsoft said the utility will now use Windows Search, incorporate results from online files stored with OneDrive and make it easier to launch files directly from the search box. In February 2020, you'll no longer be able to use the app on Android versions 2.3.7 and older, or iOS 7 and older. This, for reference, is against Android's 74.85%.

The Apple App Store was only a few months old then, and about 70 percent of smartphones sold at the time had operating systems offered by BlackBerry and Nokia.

In its blog post, a WhatsApp spokesperson has stated that following the recent decision of Microsoft to end support for Windows Mobile devices this December, the Facebook-owned messaging platform will release a final update for the devices running Windows Phone in June. Earlier, Microsoft had recommended that the users of Windows 10 Mobile should migrate to Android and iOS devices. Prior to it, the company ended support for devices running Windows Phone 8.0 platform, BlackBerry 10 and BlackBerry OS on December 31, 2017. Skype and WhatsApp had also withdrawn their services from phones run on Windows.

WhatsApp in recent time became aggressive with the features and introduced many features in quick succession, which includes the sticker features or group calling features.
