An embarrassing spelling mistake has been spotted on the new Australian $50 note.

Unfortunately, the note also contains the word responsibility spelt wrong.

The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) printed about 46 million new $50 bills a year ago, but only recently a radio station noticed a typo on the money, The Guardian reports.

The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has spelled "responsibility" as "responsibilty" on millions of new Australian $50 ($35) banknotes which came into circulation on October 18 previous year.

It was revealed yesterday that the in text of Cowan's speech to the WA Parliament in 1921, the word responsibility has the letter "i" missing after "l", spelling it as "responsibilty".

Behind Cowan's portrait is an excerpt from her maiden speech to the Western Australian Parliament.

Her steady presence on Australia's most frequently distributed note, the 50 (currently worth $47 Canadian), hid a more worrisome change in the fine print, however. Congratulations if so, because you've just done better than the Reserve Bank of Australia.

"It is a great responsibilty [sic] to be the only woman here, and I want to emphasise the necessity which exists for other women being here" is repeated several times in microscopic print.

A new $20 note is scheduled to begin printing this October, probably with the help of a few spell checkers.

The $50 bill, worth $34.90 in U.S. currency, contains anti-counterfeiting measures including a flying swan and a holographic 50 that reverses when the note is moved.

"We have printed around 400 million $50 banknotes with this error on it", an RBA spokeswoman said on Thursday.
