This error will get fixed fully by the company's developers.

Mozilla released today the fourth maintenance update to the latest Firefox 66.0 "Quantum" web browser series to address a major issue preventing all types of extensions from running or being installed.

This isn't the first time this sort of thing has happened with Firefox.

The problem causing this was simple: A digital security certificate that verified the integrity of Firefox add-ons and extensions expired. The company also said that customers should not delete and/or re-install any add-ons as an attempt to fix the issue.

Extensions were set to "legacy" status, meaning that they are no longer compatible with the current version of Firefox.

Update: Mozilla has released version 66.0.4, which includes the fix for the expired certificate and disabled addons.

So far, Mozilla hasn't responded to people asking about fixes for older versions of Firefox. (Emphasis Mozilla's.) The organization says that users shouldn't have a go at deleting and re-installing extensions since it'll remove any accumulated data. Firefox users took to social media over the weekend to discuss "armagadd-on 2.0".

While awaiting a fix, some users suggested the problem could be temporarily solved by setting the system's clock back several hours, although such a step could have side-effects such as putting an incorrect time stamp on emails sent from that system. An update for those browsers is still in the works. The certificate Mozilla uses for that objective expired, though, so Firefox started disabling extensions it no longer considered safe.

Studies is a system used by Firefox to deploy pre-release features to users before they're added to a release update.

Depending on your platform and device, you can find your browser's version number by opening Firefox then going to Help & About Firefox, or Firefox & About Firefox.

If the fix is in the active, they would see "hotfix-update-xpi-signing-intermediate-bug-1548973" in either the Active studies or Completed studies reflected.

Select the option to allow Firefox to debug the extensions on it. The company is now rolling out a software fix for the problem.

Even with the studies enabled, some users, including myself, report not receiving the hotfix.
