Up to 10 percent of the 695 confirmed measles cases in the current outbreak occurred in people who received one or two doses of the vaccine, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Five Brooklyn measles cases - including the original infection discovered in October - were traced back to trips from Israel, where another measles outbreak infected more than 1,000 people a year ago. There have been 202 confirmed cases of measles in the suburban county north of New York City.

ARPHS had contacted more than 2000 Aucklanders who may have been exposed to measles so far this year.

Until now, the highest number of annual cases after the 2000 eradication milestone happened in 2014 with 667 confirmed cases.

If you already got the government-recommended dosage of the MMR vaccine, the CDC says you don't need to re-up. Making matter more hard, symptoms don't usually show up for a week or two after exposure meaning it can be spread by people who've been infected but don't know they have the measles and may assume it's a cold or other illness.

"We are very concerned about the recent troubling rise in cases of measles", Azar said in a briefing with reporters.

Dr. Javaid emphasizes that getting the vaccine isn't recommended for everybody, pregnant women included.

"CDC considers people who received two doses of measles vaccine as children according to the USA vaccination schedule protected for life, and they do not ever need a booster dose", the organization says.

The measles virus is highly contagious and can cause blindness, deafness, brain damage or death.

Earlier this month, the health commissioner ordered each unvaccinated person who lives in certain ZIP codes of Brooklyn to receive the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine. Those who attempt to tie the rise to Southern-border-crossing immigrants do so by ignoring the epidemiological realities of a world that sees one billion people cross worldwide borders every year, sometimes into and out of countries with low vaccination rates or ongoing outbreaks.

One MMR vaccine dose protected about 95 per cent of the population, with a second dose protecting close to 99 per cent.

Dr Umair Shah, the head of Houston's county health department, said "we don't know" if these kinds of measures will become more common. After all, it's been 51 years since an effective vaccine was introduced, quickly turning the disease from a common childhood experience to a rarity, and almost two decades since the disease was declared eliminated from the U.S. Officials said is extremely safe and effective: Two doses are about 97% effective at preventing the disease, while one dose is about 93% effective. "Go to your health care provider, including a pharmacy, roll up your sleeves and get a dose of MMR".

Is it risky to get re-vaccinated?

If your vaccination record shows you received the measles vaccine between 1963 and 1967, you may want to talk to your doctor about a MMR booster shot. The CDC typically advises that the first dose of the vaccine be administered at 12 months, making young infants especially susceptible. "The way to prevent those older people from getting measles is to make sure all the kids are vaccinated".

In keeping with this theme, On 29 April 2019, in response to a tweet claiming "The GOP brought Measles back", former GOP congressman and radio personality Joe Walsh tweeted: "If you truly wanted to keep awful diseases from overtaking our population, you'd secure the border and get a handle on illegal immigration".
