In a statement, AMI said that a "decision has been taken to explore strategic options for its National Enquirer (US and United Kingdom editions), Globe and National Examiner brands which will result in their sale in the near future".

American Media CEO David Pecker confirmed the plan on Wednesday after the Washington Post reported that the company has come under "intense pressure" to part ways with the Enquirer.

The parent of the National Enquirer said Wednesday that it is exploring a possible sale as part of a "strategic review" of its tabloid business.

AMI also admitted past year to paying hush money to a woman who said she had an affair with President Trump. The story ended Bezos' marriage and the billionaire is funding his own investigation into how his text messages were obtained by National Enquirer.

But unlike the Jeff Bezos expose it never published the story in a practice known in media as "catch and kill" and kept the matter quiet.

Amid these developments, Bezos has expanded his legal team, adding attorney Matthew Schwartz, a partner at law firm Boies Schiller Flexner LLP who spent a decade as a federal prosecutor in NY, the people familiar with the matter said.

An AMI spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for further comment.

Since February, prosecutors have been examining Bezos's claim that the publisher attempted to extort him after he sought to determine how the National Enquirer gained access to private texts he exchanged with a woman named Lauren Sanchez, with whom he was having an extramarital affair.

The New York City-based publishing company said in a statement its board had concluded a months-long review of its tabloid business, leading to the decision "to explore strategic options" for the USA and United Kingdom editions of its National Enquirer, as well as its Globe and National Examiner publications. In the past two years, AMI has purchased other titles including Us Weekly and Men's Journal.

In a report, The Washington Post said AMI is reeling under financial struggle abetted by the falling circulation of Enquirer and rising debt.

This story was first published on CNN.com, "Exclusive: Jeff Bezos to meet with federal prosecutors on extortion and hacking claims".
