Telegram gains 3 million new users in 24 hours during Facebook outage

Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp suffered a global outage. What happened? Facebook finally ends daylong outage, blames server change

Facebook Inc. said a change in the way it configured computer servers caused a widespread outage of the social-media network and its other services that stretched over two days.

The New York Times recently reported that Facebook is putting a ton of resources into its own blockchain-fuelled payment system that could help it mitigate its reliance on advertising as its dominant source of revenue.

Facebook experienced a similar outage in 2008 when it had 150 million users.

'We are still investigating the overall impact of this issue, including the possibility of refunds for advertisers, ' the spokesperson added.

After staying tight-lipped on the cause of the outage for almost 24 hours, Facebook early Thursday afternoon blamed it on a "server configuration change that triggered a cascading series of issues".

The DownDetector website - one of the internet's most used sources of numbers on outages - showed the number of complaints had peaked at more than 12,000, gradually falling to about 180 in the early hours of Friday morning.

People took to Twitter to complain about the downtime.

Facebook shares were trading down 1.7 percent early Thursday afternoon, at $170.50.

Facebook's shares fell almost two per cent in morning trading on Thursday.

"We're very sorry for the inconvenience and appreciate everyone's patience", Facebook said.

Facebook suggested there was nothing new in the New York Times report.

The newspaper said the companies had access to user data that Facebook previously said was inaccessible.

"As we've said before, we are cooperating with investigators and take those probes seriously".

"As a result of a server configuration change, many people had trouble accessing our apps and services", Facebook said in a tweet. "We've provided public testimony, answered questions and pledged that we will continue to do so". Facebook's desktop platforms and apps were affected in parts of the USA, including the East and West Coast, as well as parts of Europe and elsewhere.
