At 30, World Wide Web 'not the web we wanted,' inventor says

Google Doodle celebrates World Wide Web's 30th birthday Web inventor calls for 'fight' to protect internet on its 30th birthday
Melba Vasquez | 15 March, 2019, 09:27

It was born in March 1989 in the form of a proposal for how the world's largest physics lab, CERN, could efficiently store its data.

He said that governments, technology companies and web users around the world have to make their contributions to make the web safer in the next 30 years.

Berners-Lee worked at CERN in the 1980s as a young software engineer.

In an open letter, Berners-Lee has called for global efforts to tackle state-sponsored hacking, crime and abusive language on the Internet.

The internet, which is a network of networks formed of computers, existed long before the World Wide Web.

The World Wide Web Foundation is now developing what it calls a Contract for the Web, which aims to ensure access to the internet is recognised as a human right - built for the public good.

"Tim Berners-Lee, World Wide Web founderBerners-Lee has long advocated for strong digital rights, an open internet, and breaking up corporate tech giants".

All those web pages, photos, videos and any kind of content on the online platform can be called World Wide Web, which you can access through a browser.

Berners-Lee explained on CERN's role during the birth of the WWW, which he said was largely attributed to the diversity and freedom of research at the institution. He is a professor of practice in Information Systems & Management at the Warwick Business School.

Berners-Lee said the web had clearly created great opportunities for humanity to progress and made life easier for millions of people.

The Contract for the Web seeks a collaboration among governments, companies and citizens.

"It is understandable that many people feel afraid and unsure if the web is really a force for good", said Berners-Lee.

Berners-Lee identified three major "sources of dysfunction" affecting the web: deliberate malicious intent, system design and unintended negative consequences of benevolent design.

Help could also be provided by the Web Foundation, founded by Sir Tim, which is now working with governments, companies and citizens to build a new Contract for the Web, which looks to establish concrete "norms, laws and standards" for the Web. "The Web is the most impactful innovation of our time".

Notably, in a blog post announcing the internet's 30th anniversary, Google makes an effort to head off any possible pedantic ramblings regarding the web versus the internet.

"The contract for the web must not be a list of quick fixes but a process that signals a shift in how we understand our relationship with our online community", he says.
