Amid Crisis, Facebook's Top Executive Quits In Highest-Level Departure

Facebook is losing two important executives Facebook is losing two important

Zuckerberg wrote that Cox considered leaving years ago to pursue new projects, but he chose to stay in 2016, around the time Facebook began taking heat for acting as a conduit for misinformation and Russian election interference.

Cox's unexpected departure, which he and Zuckerberg announced in separate Facebook posts Thursday, comes months after Cox was promoted in a major reorganization. Instead, the leaders of each app will report to Zuckerberg.

Shares of Facebook were down 1.7 percent in extended trading following the announcement.

In his post, Zuckerberg announced further reorganization of the company's top ranks and the departure of Chris Daniels, another executive who ran Internet.org, the company's philanthropic project to promote global internet access, and was recently promoted to lead WhatsApp.

Daniels, who had worked on Facebook initiatives in developing countries, had moved a year ago to WhatsApp, which is more popular than Facebook in many big emerging markets.

Facebook isn't hiring another executive to replace Cox.

Zuckerberg wants to evolve Facebook's messaging apps into private forums where people can communicate without worrying about what they are sharing being seen and shared by others.

Chris Cox was put in charge of some of Facebook's most important features, including Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp - which together have over 2.7 billion users worldwide.

Facebook's family of apps strategy has so far been led jointly by Cox and Javier Olivan, vice president of growth. Zuckerberg is also promising to make photos and posts automatically disappear from public view.

Their departures come barely a week after Zuckerberg announced sweeping changes to Facebook, in order re-orient the social network around encryption and privacy.

Forrester analyst Jessica Liu said it sounded like Cox was "subtly disagreeing" with Zuckerberg's privacy memo, based on Cox's farewell post.

Also, WhatsApp head Chris Daniels - who took over the chat platform last May - will be leaving the company, Zuckerberg said. "Facebook Inc.is a massive and evolving company, so it's only natural that in a company that large, not everyone will agree with every strategic change", she said.
