Google reportedly canceled future tablet and laptop projects

The Google team behind Pixelbook and Pixel Slate just got slashed Google is reportedly cutting back on hardware, moving some workers to new jobs

One chink of light is that the team are being asked to redeploy to temporary posts inside the organisation, suggesting that Google wants to hedge its bets on hardware and possibly restart development after a moratorium.

The affected workers have been told to seek temporary roles within other Google or Alphabet teams.

It is worth noting that the "roadmap cutbacks" does not have any role to play in hardware division other than the tablet and laptop and that is a sigh of relief for employees occupied with projects related to Pixel smartphones, smart home devices and wearables.

Google's Pixel Slate, launched late past year at the company's Made By Google event in NY, is yet to launch in many markets and makes an intriguing case for itself running Chrome OS but also being able to run Android apps.

According to one source, the Create hardware team had a "bunch of stuff in the works" and that the cutting the number of hardware engineers and program managers on the team will likely "pare down the portfolio" of products.

While Google hasn't commented on the report, it looks like the Mountain View-based company is just making hardware a second-class citizen of its ecosystem, trying instead to focus on projects that align with its push for continued growth.

Back in May 2016, Google first announced that it would be releasing updates to Chrome OS that would allow Android apps on Chromebook. Most Chromebooks that are not manufactured by Google itself are much lower priced, like Samsung's Chromebook Plus which starts at $499. The longtime tech reviewer Walt Mossberg said that the Pixel C represents "an object lesson in what Google shouldn't do if it pursues home-grown integration of hardware and software".

Google admits that its hardware business is not profitable enough to accommodate a large number of employees and therefore has chose to trim the fat. According to a new report, Google's now taking employees that worked on those devices, moving them to new departments, and canceling future projects that were being worked on. Since then, sources tell us that pressure has increased to make hardware at Google into a "real business".
