According to DownDetector.com, tens of thousands of people from many different countries reported the social media giant was not working for them.

"We're aware that some people are now having trouble accessing the Facebook family of apps", company spokesman Tom Parnell said by email.

It was unclear when the issue might be resolved.

Wednesday afternoon, a number of Facebook and Instagram users were having trouble accessing their accounts.

5NEWS is trying to update our Facebook users with breaking news and today's top stories, but sadly our page is now down.

Users were given an "error" message when they attempted to log in to Facebook that read, "Facebook Will Be Back Soon".

Facebook seems to be down in various forms particularly for those who are trying to log in on desktop.

Facebook's main product, its Messenger service, image-sharing site Instagram and messaging app WhatsApp have all been disrupted. The outages appeared to be concentrated in the Americas and Europe. Instagram was also not able to load itself, whereas Instagram Stories were down, direct messages and the button to post new content were also not working.

Instead, many took to Twitter to voice their displeasure and to try to find out what was going on.

Facebook finally tweeted - two hours after they started having issues. Many report being unable to post, share, or like.

The issue also affected Facebook Workplace, the companies service for businesses to communicate internally. That outage was the second time that month.
