Nissan to end Infiniti production in UK Nissan to end Sunderland production of luxury Infiniti brand

Past year the company delivered just 6,000 units in the region. According to the plan, Infiniti will withdraw from western European markets in early 2020.

Infiniti said it will discontinue the Q30 sedan and the QX30 sport-utility vehicle (SUV) and cease their production by the middle of 2019 at Nissan's manufacturing factory in Sunderland. As a result the Q30 auto and QX30 sports-utility vehicle will no longer be made in the UK.

So far this year Infiniti's sales are down almost 11 percent to 20,909 units in the United States.

About 70,000 of Infinite cars have been made in Sunderland since production began in 2015.

Infiniti promises that it will assist impacted workers in finding employment and negotiate end-of-franchise agreements with its retail outlets.

Existing customers are being advised to head online and register details on the Infiniti website where they will be informed about the company's restructure and service and maintenance solutions going further.

Infiniti has announced a restructuring plan that will focus the brand on its largest growth markets, which are North America and China.

'In the coming weeks Unite will be working closely with Nissan to protect jobs and ensure that redeployment is carried out in an open and transparent way.

The carmaker made a decision to shift production of its Q30 unit to Japan amid weak sales in western Europe, with work due to conclude in Sunderland "by mid-2019". Infiniti intends on electrifying its portfolio by 2021, which might not be fast enough for Europe's liking.

'Nissan has reiterated its commitment to the United Kingdom and its workforce by continuing to manufacture in Sunderland the current Qashqai, Leaf and Juke models, as well as the new Qashqai model'.
