Thomas got a lot done in the eight holes he played Saturday - six in the morning to complete the second round, two in the twilight to at least leave Riviera with the lead. Adam Scott is a shot back playing in the final group with Thomas and J.B.

The American finished the final six holes of his second round on Saturday, carding a six-under 65, and managed two holes of his third round before the day's play was ended due to darkness. He didn't realize it at the time, but this could be a sweat.

Hours earlier, he made a 25-foot birdie putt from the fringe on his final hole of the second round for a 71 to assure he would make the cut - he ultimately made it with one shot to spare, 10 shots out of the lead - and then he looked like a different player. Even if he does survive the cut, Woods' winless streak at this event-which he hosts as part of his TGR initiative-will nearly assuredly reach 13 and counting. The nine bogeys were the problem. Six 3-putts is - I don't think I've ever done that. He also hit 51 of 72 greens, highlighted by 17 in the first round and 14 in the third round.

All in all, the ball striking was better than his season-opening T20 at the Farmers Insurance Open, though the putting means the finish will be roughly the same. Early, early mornings. We were warming up before the sun came up and finishing up when the sun was down. After four pars, he reached the par-4 9th needing to make birdie for a chance to continue playing this weekend. And if I make a few more putts, I'm right in the mix.

Woods has holed a healthy amount of lengthy putts this week, but it's the short ones that have given him issues. 'I'm not feeling comfortable because I'm not seeing the line.

Thomas, who could be set to play 34 holes on Sunday if the weather holds, admitted he struggled with conditions.

"I hope so", Scott said when asked if the overnight wait to resume the third round could hurt Thomas' momentum. "That was probalby the coldest I've been on a golf course in a while".

Woods clearly found something Saturday afternoon.

Seamus Power also made the cut and is one-over through four holes of his third round. Woods, who has not missed a cut since the U.S. Open, has missed 15 of his 19 PGA Tour cuts starting in 2010 and missed two in 2018. He'll likely have two more rounds to iron out the kinks before heading south of the border for next week's WGC-Mexico Championship.
