UFC 234 was an attractive even with Whittaker facing Kelvin Gastelum for the middleweight title and Adesanya/Silva vying for the right to fight the victor, but Whittaker's exit has turned the event on its head.

Whittaker will undergo surgery Saturday, UFC president Dana White confirmed to Okamoto.

ESPN first reported the news and said Whittaker's withdrawal was not a result of weight cutting issues.

At this time, there is no word on when the fight between Whittaker and Gastelum will be rescheduled.

It means the highly-anticipated No 1 contender match between Adesanya (15-0) and Brazilian legend Anderson Silva (34-8, 1nc) will now serve as the main event. A lightweight clash between Lando Vannata and Marcos Rosa Mariano that was originally scheduled for the Fight Pass prelims has been moved to the pay-per-view lineup.

Ironically, injury also forced Whittaker out of his last scheduled title defence in Australia, a UFC 221 clash with Luke Rockhold in Perth.

Kiwi Israel Adesanya will now be headlining UFC 234 in Melbourne on Sunday against Anderson Silva.

He is a heavy favorite going up against the 43-year old Silva, who has not fought in two years, and a victory should catapult the entertaining Style Bender into the main event scene.

Abdelaziz said White told him that the UFC will "take care" of Gastelum.
