The Duke of Edinburgh has chose to give up driving and surrender his driving licence after his auto crash near the Sandringham Estate last month.

The Duke of Edinburgh, who turns 98 in June, was driving a Land Rover on January 17 near the Sandringham estate in Norfolk when he crashed into another auto.

Witnesses revealed Philip was shaking and pleading "get me out" after his Land Rover crashed while he was out driving alone without a protection officer.

Queen Elizabeth II's husband was involved in a crash in January with a vehicle carrying two women and a baby.

The January crash occurred just outside the royal family's Sandringham estate when the Duke's auto collided with another vehicle, injuring passenger Emma Fairweather.

He escaped injury but Emma Fairweather broke her wrist and called for Prince Philip to be prosecuted if found to be at fault.

The Crown Prosecution Service said in a statement that "we review each file carefully before a decision is made and will take this development into account".

Philip was driving a Range Rover on January 17, when his vehicle and a Kia collided close to the Sandringham Estate.

Buckingham Palace has announced that Prince Philip, 97, has given up his licence.

"I would like you to know how very sorry I am for my part in the accident", Philip wrote in the letter, which was obtained by the UK's Sunday Mirror newspaper.

He blamed the low, bright sun for obscuring his vision, adding he was "very contrite about the consequences".

Two days after the accident, Prince Philip was photographed driving again without a seatbelt.

More than a week after the crash, the duke wrote a letter to the passengers in the other auto to apologise.

"It will be the queen, she'll be the only one who can really tell him", Ingrid Seward, editor in chief of Majesty Magazine, told British ITV after the crash. "I was pleasantly surprised because of the personalised nature".

In 2016, the duke famously drove the Obamas when the then USA president and First Lady visited Windsor.

Queen Elizabeth's husband retired in 2017 from public duties, ending all official engagements, although he has remained active according to reports, walking on grounds of the royal family's enormous lands and even sitting horse-drawn carriages.
