Michigan Democrat John Dingell, the longest-serving member of Congress in us history who fought for years for key liberal causes including healthcare expansion and civil rights - and who more recently delighted his 264,000 followers on Twitter with biting commentary and wit - died Thursday at home in Dearborn. But after the death of his father in 1955, 29-year-old Dingell followed in his political footsteps, winning a special election to succeed John Sr. He represented his MI district for almost 60 years, from 1955 to 2015.

"Deepest sympathies to Congresswoman Debbie Dingell and the entire family of John Dingell", Trump said. "I look forward to catching up with him soon".

When, 17 years later, Democrats did expand health insurance coverage under Barack Obama, the president gave Dingell a pen he used to sign the legislation.

Former US Congressman John Dingell dies at 92 Office of US Rep. Dingell was serving as a page on the House floor when President Roosevelt asked Congress to declare war on Japan on December 8, 1941.

Dingell also discussed his personal views of power, palpably showing his reverence for the position of public trust the voters had given him, and the responsibilities it came with.

In a joint statement, Bill and Hillary Clinton said that they "are grateful to have had the chance to work with him, to celebrate his becoming the longest-serving member of Congress in history, and most of all, to call him our friend". "I was a working-class kid from a Polish neighbourhood in Detroit, and this was quite an event for me", Dingell told Time magazine at the time. I know he leaves behind a meaningful legacy.

West Michigan Congressman Bill Huizenga said in a written statement, "John Dingell was a fierce advocate for Michigan and a titan of the House who worked with a servant's heart".

Dingell won more than two dozen elections during his career, at first representing a Detroit district but eventually shifting because of redistricting to various southeastern MI communities.

Dingell was first elected in 1955, to fill the House seat vacated by his late father. "I was fortunate to speak to John Dingell this afternoon", Bush said in a statement on Thursday night.

Explaining his decision to retire in 2015, he said back then: "I don't want people to be sorry for me". I went through the Depression as a boy.

His wife Debbie said at the time: 'He's alert and in good spirits, cracking jokes like always'.

Some prominent Republicans including former President George W. Bush praised Dingell.

Dingell, who served his final year as a representative in 2015, suffered a heart attack in September and was receiving hospice care on Wednesday, according to several reports.

John's humor became well-known once he took up Twitter.
