NOAA, NASA agree: 2018 fourth-hottest year on record

Kristine Garrett | 09 February, 2019, 21:37

NASA scientists announced Wednesday that the Earth's average surface temperature in 2018 was the fourth highest in almost 140 years of record-keeping and a continuation of an unmistakable warming trend, The New York Times reports.

According to the report released Wednesday, global temperatures in 2018 were 1.5 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than the average from 1951 to 1980. 2016 now ranks as the hottest year on record, with 2017 coming in second and 2015 third. It founds that 2018 global temperatures were 0.79 degrees Celsius above the 20th-century average. Such cold weather has made it really hard for many to believe that global warming is real. In addition, mass loss from the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets continued to contribute to sea level rise, and increased temperatures contributed to longer and more intense fire seasons, ranging from California to Australia.

Patrick Verkooijen, head of the Global Centre on Adaptation in the Netherlands, told Reuters that the WMO report showed "climate change is not a distant phenomenon but is here right now".

NOAA and NASA each analyze temperature measurements from thousands of sites around the world, including weather stations on land and ships and buoys spread across the world's oceans.

Using computer simulations, the British weather office forecast s that the next five years will average somewhere between 58.51 and 59.49 degrees (14.73 to 15.27 Celsius). Higher than normal temperatures are shown in red.

US President Donald Trump, who has cast doubt on mainstream climate science and promotes the coal industry, plans to withdraw the United States from the Paris Agreement.

The human toll also was high, with 247 killed and many more injured in weather and climate disasters.

The NASA and NOAA reports are consistent with analyses by other governments, including the Japan Meteorological Agency and the European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service, both of which also concluded that 2018 was the fourth-warmest year on record.

Last year, 29 countries - including much of Europe and the Middle East - and the continent of Antarctica had their hottest years on record, said Zeke Hausfather, a climate scientist with the nonprofit research organization. Even an increase in 1.5 could be a great risk to the stability of the world.
