Moto G7 Play review

Moto G7 series Moto G7 Play review
Melba Vasquez | 09 February, 2019, 15:31

The Moto G7 series consists of the standard Moto G7, the G7 Play, the G7 Power and the G7 Plus, and here we will take a closer look at the differences between them.

Before now, nearly all the features and design of the models have been in the open via leaks but let's still take a quick look at the specifications of the models. The new phones come with a premium design with familiar wristwatch-like circular camera module on the back. There is an 8-megapixel f/2.2 front shooter for capturing selfies. Also worth mentioning is that the Moto G7 is splash resistant with its P2i water-repellent nano coating. It weighs 198g, which makes it feel a little bulky compared to some other smart phones, although not almost as bulky as you'd expect given its powerful battery.

In addition to the Moto G7, Play, and Power, there's the Motorola Moto G7 Plus.

They also have much larger notches than the Moto G7 and G7 Plus - instead of a waterdrop notch, Motorola opted to include a regular, wide notch.

The Moto G7 Power packs Qualcomm's Snapdragon 632 processor, which promises 50 percent faster performance than the Snapdragon 450 chip in the Moto G6.

It's still a very slim device and it's light too - certainly lighter than the Moto G7 Power, which is much weightier - but the finish of the G7 Play is much more in line with its price point compared to the rest of the G7 family.

As for the Moto G7 Power, the device is powered by a Snapdragon 632 SoC clocked at 1.8GHz. Built-in memory is 2GB RAM - a bit cramped nowadays - and 32GB of storage. Curiously, the G7 Power lacks the cheaper Play's front-facing flash, which sits on the right side of its own notch.

The G7 Plus (costs 269 pounds) features a 6.2-inch FHD+ screen, a tear-drop notch and Gorilla Glass back. That's about the biggest battery I've seen on a mainstream phone, and Motorola says it should provide 3 days of battery life. The 3,000mAh battery matches the more upscale models, but charges at only 5W. It also supports fast charging via TurboPower. The G7 Play also does not support Motorola's TurboPower charging.

The Moto G7 Power is easily differentiable between the other two phones as it sports a slightly smaller 6.2-inch screen and it features HD+ resolution of 720×1520 pixels. The Honor 8X falls slap-bang in the same price bracket as the Moto G6, offering a similar all-screen design with a small notch at the top of the display, dual-rear camera, and 4GB of RAM.

The G7 Power retains the headphone jack on the Moto G7, but shuffles it over to the top edge. A single 12MP camera is round the back with an 8MP selfie cam on the front. In the camera department it comes with 12-megapixel dual-rear cameras.

The Moto G7 Power is the battery focused smartphone of the quartet, with a 5,000mAh battery coupled with Motorola's Turbo Charging capabilities.

Like its predecessors, the Moto G7 has a more powerful variant in the Moto G7 Plus which comes running the more enhanced Snapdragon 636 under-the-hood with the same configuration of 4GB of RAM with 64GB of storage. In a short while after the official launch, Motorola will make the G7 Play available on Boost Mobile, Virgin Mobile, U.S. Cellular, Republic Wireless and Ting. But should you ever want extra storage, the option is there with the Moto G7. All the four Moto phones will go on sale in Brazil and Mexico starting today and will be launched in other markets in mid-February.

With an Indian launch expected to be made a month from now, Motorola has officially unveiled its latest G-series smartphone at an event in Brazil, as we expected.
