MLB Getting Rid of Disabled List, Sort Of

MLB Getting Rid of Disabled List, Sort Of MLB Getting Rid of Disabled List, Sort Of

"They say, 'It's overblown, ' or, 'What you're saying is fringe.' But not baseball".

The change is being made out of concern that the current term, "disabled", falsely conflates disabilities with injuries that limit a player's participation and result in a temporary inability to compete.

The rules of the "injured list" will remain the same as before, and the new moniker actually brings MLB more in line with other major North American sports leagues.

Major League Baseball says it's concerned the term "disabled" can confuse a player's injury with the "inability to participate in sports".

Major League Baseball will rename the disabled list as the "injured list", a source familiar with the plan told ESPN.

The disabled list is going on the permanent DL.

Perhaps the greatest impact of the name change will be to our habits, since "DL" is firmly established and it'll take some time for "IL" to really establish itself as part of popular nomenclature. "This is the first step in a journey to making sure they're disability inclusive". It's the "injured reserve list" in NFL and NHL, the "inactive list" in the NBA. Teams can place players on the list for 10 days or 60 days, in which case a ballclub can add a player through free agency, trade or promotion from the minors as a replacement.

The expansion of rosters to 26 men with a 12-pitcher maximum.

The injured list has existed in some form since the early days of professional baseball, according to Baseball Prospectus. They were even allowed to travel with their team as a "coacher". Also on the list of rules under consideration is moving away from multiple trade deadlines - now there is a non-waiver deadline in July, plus the waivers-required date a month later.

The "injured list" now includes a 10-day version (changed from a 15-day version in 2017) and a 60-day version that teams can use depending on the severity of a player's injury.
