During his 21-seasons in the MLB, the legendary baseball star made major league baseball history as the first African-American manager when he managed the Cleveland Indians during the last two years of his playing career.

Robinson was named the NL Rookie of the Year in 1956 after hitting 38 home runs and driving in 83 runs. In between, Robinson made a dozen additional All-Star appearances and won Most Valuable Player awards in both the National League (with the Reds in 1961) and American League (in 1966, his first season with the Orioles). In 1966, he won the Triple Crown, leading the AL with a.316 average, 49 homers, 122 RBIs and 122 runs.

Robinson became an instant hit with the Orioles in 1966 as the unanimous AL MVP. He finished out his time on the field as a player-manager of the Indians, making him the first African American manager in the history of baseball. Robinson remained with the Indians until 1977, then managed the San Francisco Giants and Orioles. The Reds, Orioles and Indians have retired Robinson's No. 20 and saluted him with statues at their ballparks.

Former Orioles pitcher Jim Palmer, who also gained first-ballot entry into the Hall, once called Robinson, "the best player I ever saw".

"I'll tell you what about that team", Robinson told Eisenberg.

Frank Robinson was one of the greatest players and managers of all time.

His legacy, however, was cemented the day he simply stood in the dugout at old Cleveland Stadium as the first black manager in Major League Baseball.

Robinson hit two home runs against the Reds - of all clubs - in teaming with future Hall of Fame third baseman Brooks Robinson to win another crown for the Orioles in 1970.

Honored as a trailblazer: Robinson was widely honored, from the earliest days of his playing career through recent years.

On the field, Robinson was one of the game's most-feared sluggers for a almost unfathomable stretch, with his first All-Star nod coming in his Rookie of the Year season of 1956 and his final one occurring in 1974, his final full campaign.

Affectionately nicknamed "Pencils" for his thin stature growing up, Robinson was born in Beaumont, Texas, but spent his high school years in Oakland, Calif., where he played basketball alongside Hall of Famer Bill Russell.

He played for the Dodgers in 1972 and was traded to the California Angels after the season, played with them in 1973 and for most of the 1974 season before he was dealt to Cleveland.

The Orioles confirmed Robinson's passing Thursday afternoon.

"We are deeply saddened by this loss of our friend, colleague and legend, who worked in our game for more than 60 years".

Later, Robinson spent several years working as an executive for Major League Baseball.
