During his 21-seasons in the MLB, the legendary baseball star made major league baseball history as the first African-American manager when he managed the Cleveland Indians during the last two years of his playing career.
Robinson was named the NL Rookie of the Year in 1956 after hitting 38 home runs and driving in 83 runs. In between, Robinson made a dozen additional All-Star appearances and won Most Valuable Player awards in both the National League (with the Reds in 1961) and American League (in 1966, his first season with the Orioles). In 1966, he won the Triple Crown, leading the AL with a.316 average, 49 homers, 122 RBIs and 122 runs.
Robinson became an instant hit with the Orioles in 1966 as the unanimous AL MVP. He finished out his time on the field as a player-manager of the Indians, making him the first African American manager in the history of baseball. Robinson remained with the Indians until 1977, then managed the San Francisco Giants and Orioles. The Reds, Orioles and Indians have retired Robinson's No. 20 and saluted him with statues at their ballparks.
Former Orioles pitcher Jim Palmer, who also gained first-ballot entry into the Hall, once called Robinson, "the best player I ever saw".
