Bell's total funding commitment to mental health is set to top $100 million, as workers are encouraged to Tweet, Snapchat and Facebook their mental health stories and support.

Today is Bell Let's Talk Day, the time of the year when focusing on mental health takes the national spotlight.

However, it's key, said Berndt, to continue talking about mental health, long after the initiative ends. "Growing and expanding our services at Sault Area Hospital will help provide the level of care that every member of our community deserves", said Teresa Martone, executive director, Sault Area Hospital Foundation.

Bell Let's Talk Day is January 30. "Marie region", said Mary Deacon, chair of Bell Let's Talk.

Naysayers, quite vocal on social media, believe it's bogus or only a corporate PR move, but when Bell launched Let's Talk in 2010, it was in part because Bell Inc. and Bell Canada president and CEO George Cope had recognized that mental health services in Canada were underfunded and negatively stigmatized.

For every text message (not iMessage) sent and mobile or long-distance call made by Bell Canada, Bell Aliant and Bell MTS customers, Bell will donate five cents to Canadian mental health initiatives.

The Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) recognizes that one in five Canadians will suffer from a mental illness at some point in their lives. "And ultimately, it's to reduce the stigma around mental health".

Many people are getting the message, based on the increased demand in services the CMHA Lambton Kent has seen. All over Twitter, Devils players and the organization were sure to promote the hashtag #BellLetsTalk in support of ending the stigma surrounding mental illness.

We often hear from experts about mental health and why it's so important that we know better so we can do better, and Your Morning's Anne-Marie Mediwake knows just how critical this conversation is.
