Ebola spreading into "high security risk area" of DRC

Ebola Congo outbreak: UNICEF confirms virus second largest in history | Daily Star Two Dr Congo Soldiers Killed By Ebola Virus

"Four of the new cases were reported in Katwa, the latest hot spot in the outbreak that has swept across North Kivu and Ituri provinces in the DRC during the past six months..."

A dispute linked to a tribal chief's burial is seen as a catalyst for the fighting between the Banunu and Batende communities. Hundreds of buildings, including churches, schools and health centers, were damaged in the violence, it said. According to the report, although outbreak risk remains high at the national and regional levels, the global risk level remains low. "The Mission reports that the security situation is now relatively calm, with national security forces having deployed to the area".

It is the biggest Ebola outbreak since the virus ravaged West Africa between 2014 and 2016.

More than 460 people have died from the disease, as response continues to be hampered by insecurity issues, frequent movements of people in the affected areas and resistance from some communities.

"While we have been able to largely control the disease in Mangina, Beni and Komanda, the virus continues to spread in the Butembo area, largely because of insecurity and population movement", said Dr. Gianfranco Rotigliano, UNICEF Representative in the DRC.

UNICEF is scaling up its response to help victims and control the spread of the disease. The UN and its humanitarian partners dispatched emergency help - medicine, food, water tablets and malaria kits - to further help the communities.

The UN team from the Joint UN Human Rights Office (UNJHRO) and UN mission in DRC (MONUSCO) involved in the investigation said the bodies of at least 535 people, who were killed in ethnic clashes last December, have been found, according to a statement.

In eastern and northern parts of the DR Congo, 682 confirmed cases of Ebola have been recorded and 54 probable cases, the health ministry said on Monday.
