Now, VW is bringing the dune basher back.

Although it hasn't been confirmed for production just yet, Volkswagen created it to show that its upcoming MEB platform for fully electric vehicles is flexible enough to accommodate lower-volume niche vehicles such as this - so our suspicion is that it will eventually get the green light if the public get excited enough about the show auto.

Volkswagen aims to spur interest in its upcoming lineup of mass-market full-electric cars with a modern version of an American beach buggy from the 1960s. It is vibrancy and energy on four wheels. Like the Dune Buggies that roamed the USA in the 60s and 70s, the e-Buggy keeps the roofless design, large wheels, and off-road tires that give the auto its iconic look.

VW said is has developed the concept to demonstrate the flexibility of its MEB electric vehicle architecture that will underpin battery-powered cars for its VW, Audi, Skoda and Seat brands, starting with the Golf-sized I.D. hatchback that goes into production in Germany at the end of this year for sale in Europe. Already used for large-scale production models, the carmaker wants to prove that its fully electric platform can also be used to facilitate the development of low-volume niche vehicles as well.

The history of recreational vehicles and Volkswagen technology is a long one.

Beyond those few details, VW isn't saying much else and has only released two teaser photos ahead of the 89th International Geneva Motor Show opens its doors on March 7.

In fact, from the '60s to the '80s, Volkswagen says about 250,000 one-offs or low-volume specialty vehicles were produced globally by builders the world over.
