Student Dies After Eating Leftover Pasta That Was Five Days Old

Patty Aguilar | 31 January, 2019, 15:42

"Typically, food poisoning just causes stomach inflammation, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea, it doesn't typically cause acute liver failure, and even worse, we can't find out which bacteria is causing the problem because culturing it would take days - days [the student] doesn't have because his liver is quickly shutting down", Bernard said.

A young man was found dead in his bed five days after eating spaghetti leftovers that had been kept out of the fridge in his kitchen.

The report's authors said the spaghetti had been stored at room temperature before the 20-year-old used the microwave to warm it up.

In a case that has been highlighted by Dr Bernard on YouTube, a student with poor knowledge of hygiene ended up dying in his sleep after eating 5-day-old pasta.

Bacillus cereus is a spore forming bacteria that produces toxins, causing cause vomiting and diarrhea. Unfortunately, his parents found him dead the next morning after he failed to wake up for class.

Assuming he was suffering from a common case of food poisoning, he drank water and went to bed, hoping to sleep it off.

Dr Bernard, a licenced practitioner who studies and shares weird medical cases found around the world on his YouTube channel. "Because the emetic toxin is preformed in food and is not inactivated by heat treatment, it is important to prevent B. cereus growth and its cereulide production during storage".

The sudden death of a Belgium student who ate rotten pasta has made worldwide headlines after a United States professor used the case study to explain the impact of severe food poisoning on the human body.

"The food poisoning that results from it is usually self-limiting, meaning one can recover from it through intrinsic bodily functions".

AJ's story was first published in 2008, but a new YouTube video by a man named Dr. Bernard has put it back into today's headlines. "Many people eat pasta, or any other form of noodles, that are leftover for a day or two and they're fine", he said, "but be careful of food left out for more than a few hours". If the food smells amusing, it's always better to be safe than sorry'.

The pasta was left unrefrigerated for five days, according to the Journal of Clinical Microbiology.

As scary as this story may be, it shouldn't stop you from eating leftover pasta or rice again.
