Microsoft's Azure revenue growth slows

Microsoft FY19 Q2 earnings: Big boost for Surface and $32.5 billion in revenue Microsoft Q2 strong amid commercial cloud revenue surge to $36 billion annual run rate

The company reported revenue of $32.5 billion and net income of $8.4 billion, which are both sharp increases over the company's $28.9 billion in revenue and $7.5 billion net income from past year.

Excluding one-time items, Microsoft earned $1.10 per share, edging past analysts' estimates of $1.09 per share. Commercial Office revenue was up 11 percent, with seat growth of 27 percent; this growth continues to be driven by the shift to cloud, with Office 365 revenue up 34 percent but perpetually licensed revenue down 21 percent. This would be dandy, except that past year Azure revenue grew 98 per cent.

Microsoft's personal computing division, home to Windows software and still its largest by revenue, showed revenue growth of 7% to $13 billion, while analysts had expected $13.07 billion.

From a growth perspective, Surface was one of Microsoft's strongest performers: Its revenues surged by 39 percent in the quarter, thanks to strong sales across both consumer and commercial. The company said it grew Office 365 Consumer subscribers to 33.3 million. Complicating things even further are the numbers for Windows OEM non-Pro revenue which tumbled 11% in revenue earnings and Microsoft was forced to admit that entry-level category devices (presumably Chromebooks) are sapping the businesses momentum.

Office consumer revenue growth to continue to be in the low single digits due to slow down in PC market.

Operating income was $10.3 billion and increased 18%.

Microsoft forecast revenue of between $29.4 billion and $30.1 billion in the current quarter. Windows simply isn't the universal computer language it once was and the situation is likely to get worse. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella mentioned that strong commercial cloud performance lead to these results.

Microsoft has long courted customers outside the U.S. and has a 17% share of the global cloud market, research firm Canalys previously said.

The only area that was down was Windows OEM revenue, which declined by five percent.

Cash flow also went up by 13% YoY, pushed by higher collections from customers, partially offset by higher tax and supplier payments, while the free cash flow reached $5.2 billion, experiencing a 2% YoY decrease following capital expenditures in support of Microsoft's cloud business.
