Champion race horse trainer Darren Weir and two other men have been arrested with police seizing a gun in an early morning raid.

Police executed warrants at properties in Miners Rest and Warrnambool just before 6.00am.

"During the course of our investigation we sought the support of Victoria Police's Sporting Integrity Intelligence Unit".

Racing Victoria said "as the matters are the subject of on-going investigations by Victoria Police and Racing Victoria we are not at liberty at this time to disclose the identities of the persons arrested nor the details of the investigations" (full statement below).

He said the alleged offences "relate to offences of obtaining financial advantage by deception, engaging in conduct that corrupts or would corrupt a betting outcome, and the use of corrupt conduct information for betting purposes, and attempting to commit an indictable offence, and also charges that relate to animal cruelty".

"I can let you know that we have initially located a number of items which police have seized, including what we believe to be an unregistered firearm, three conducted energy devices, commonly called tasers, or in the racing industry referred to as jiggers".

Victorian Racing Minister Martin Pakula said the investigation showed authorities were enforcing rules "without fear or favour".

Schlink says the investigation "has been several months in the making" and warns there could be more shocking revelations to come.

"As minister for racing and a racing lover, I'm committed to maintaining the integrity of our sport and any allegations of breaches are extremely disappointing", he said in a statement.

The trio were later released pending further investigation, Victoria Police Assistant Commissioner Neil Paterson said, adding the investigation stretched back to last August and involved allegations of corruption in sport.

No charges have been laid by police as yet.

"Racing Victoria's primary objective is to protect the integrity of the sport. and ensure a level playing field for all", he said.

Since his Melbourne Cup victory Weir has gone on to become Australia's most successful horse trainer in recent years.

A one-time small-time trainer in rural Victoria, his rise has been meteoric in the past five years, including the Melbourne Cup victor of Prince Of Penzance in 2015.

Three people, including Weir, were arrested but he has since been released. Weir was among three men arrested for questioning following the raids which uncovered four "jiggers", an unlicensed firearm and drugs.

"The rules we have in place are that there are mandatory rules around some of the issues that have been investigated, about corrupted racing and electrical devices", Racing Victoria chief Giles Thompson told Nine network on Thursday.

Racing.com understands that the 48-year-old Miners Rest man that was arrested on Wednesday morning is Weir.
