Metro Exodus timed exclusive to Epic Store

Metro Exodus shuns Steam Here’s what happened Metro Exodus timed exclusive to Epic Store

Physical copies of games have shipped with digital keys for a long time, so it's not a surprise that Exodus - which will take up about 53GB of space on Xbox One and 59GB on PC, although the initial download is likely to be less than that - isn't shipping with a physical disc.

Metro Exodus publisher Deep Silver and Epic Games announced today that the PC version of the title will be removed from Steam and will release only through the Epic Games Store.

THQ Nordic released Darksiders 3 on both Steam and the Epic Games Store, and presumably we'll see more of that, but the revenue split and terms of the exclusivity deals must be pretty tempting based on what we're witnessing right now.

Ever since Epic launched its Epic Games Store, Steam has been bleeding talent and games; slowly, but surely.

The news follows the announcement that Ubisoft's The Division 2, due out on March 15, will also be an Epic Games store exclusive. As a result of publisher Deep Silver's new partnership with Epic, the game's price has been cut to $50 for the standard edition ($60 on Steam) and $75 for the gold edition ($85 on Steam).

After this year - i.e. on February 14, 2020 - Metro Exodus will be arriving on the Steam storefront, although customers who have already pre-ordered the title on this platform will have their orders honored. But rather than sending out copies of Steam keys, as has been customary given Steam's traditional dominance, the developers confirmed that users buying physical copies will get keys for Epic's store instead. On the Epic Games Store, the game will cost $49.99, it will come with a soundtrack and digital art book if you pre-order.

"The developer and publisher have assured us that all prior sales of the game on Steam will be fulfilled on Steam, and Steam owners will be able to access the game and any future updates or DLC through Steam". Specifically, Valve says "the decision to remove the game is unfair to Steam customers, especially after a long presale period". According to THQ Nordic, the decision to release the game initially only on Epic's store was made entirely by Koch Media who is responsible for Deep Silver's games.
