On immigration, she blasted Trump's "inhumane" policy that has led to child separations at the border, and said Trump has failed young immigrants who were brought to the country as children.
Harris invoked the speech that Robert F. Kennedy gave in 1968 when he announced that he would challenge President Lyndon B. Johnson, noting that Kennedy said "at stake is not simply the leadership of our party and even our country, it is our right to moral leadership of this planet". Since her announcement, Harris has been criticized for her background as a prosecutor for the District Attorney of San Francisco, and Attorney General of California.
Harris's launch has drawn heavily on symbolism.
Harris immediately took her campaign to Iowa, the state that votes first in the nominating process, holding a televised town hall from Des Moines where she eviscerated the Trump administration for "lighting that fire" of racial division and seeking to "vilify" young immigrants. "My mother used to say, "Don't sit around and complain about things, do something", Ms. Harris said. She officially entered the race on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Some commentators have been drawing parallels between Harris and Obama since early on in the California senator's political career, while others said such comparisons were reductive, with one writer, Holly Thomas, calling the urge to compare the two "symptomatic of a lazy habit that infantilizes high-profile women in America and overseas and skims over the personal details and unique circumstances that shaped them". And while Obama had represented the 13th District for three terms in Illinois Senate from 1997 to 2004 before winning a landslide victory to represent the state in U.S. Senate, the 46-year-old's presidential campaign was widely dismissed as a "novel feature" of the 2008 race, with many questioning his age and experience.
She said projecting presidential authority "means speaking with integrity (and) speaking truth, and speaking in a way that expresses and indicates some level of interest and concern in people other than oneself". Multiple lawmakers such as Senators Elizabeth Warren and Kirsten Gillibrand have already announced their candidacy, and Harris may have to take on candidates with larger name recognition such as Sen.
Sens. Cory Booker of New Jersey, Sherrod Brown of Ohio, Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota and Bernie Sanders of Vermont may also run.
But her prime-time town hall brought her into the living rooms of many more Americans. In the weeks before last November's elections, she traveled to the leadoff caucus state to campaign on behalf of Democrats, and also visited other early-voting states. Aides say the campaign will have a second office in Oakland.
