Smartphone brand Samsung has announced that it will alter the phone charger design this year. Although bioplastics are made from renewable materials, they don't always biodegrade faster than their petrochemical counterparts, and the intensive farming needed to produce the raw materials for them can damage local ecosystems. These materials are made from plastic wastes and non-fossil fuel materials such as starch or sugar cane, respectively.
According to the Korean manufacturer, they are stepping up in addressing society's environmental issues such as resource depletion and plastic waste. While companies like Apple and Samsung have made strides in consumer tech, we've also seen other industries like automotive rise to the challenge, including making greater use of recycled materials, bioplastics and biofabrics, and other alternatives to traditional production. They also added that Samsung will adopt more environmentally sustainable materials even if it means an increase in cost. By the end of next year, it plans to only use paper products certified by environmental organizations like the Forest Stewardship Council and Sustainable Forestry Initiative. By 2030, meanwhile, Samsung says it aims to have used 500,000 tons of recycled plastics and collected 7.5m tons of discarded products between then and 2009.
