Too Much Fried Food May Shorten Your Life

Study Say no to fried chicken it will shorten your lifespan A new study reveals women who enjoy fried chicken are at greater risk of dying from heart-related problems

In a research on woman over the age of 50 years from the United States, investigators from the University of Iowa in Iowa City, IA have found that overindulging in fried foods can increase a person's risk of death from multiple causes.

Bao's team looked at the food habits of nearly 107,000 women between the ages of 50 and 79 from 40 clinics across the United States between 1993 and 1998. They looked at the food habits of the participants from 1993 to 1998 and followed up with them for about 18 years on average.

A new study links regular fried chicken consumption - at least one serving a week - to a 13 percent increased risk of premature death, at least among older women.

This, of course, isn't the first time the effects of fried food consumption on health have been studied, and the study's lead author Wei Bao acknowledged as much to CNN: "We know fried food consumption is something very common in the United States and also around the world", he said.

The researchers looked at the women's total and specific consumption of different fried foods, including: "fried chicken"; "fried fish, fish sandwich and fried shellfish (shrimp and oysters)"; and other fried foods, such as french fries, tortilla chips and tacos.

Women who eat more than 1 serving a week of fried chicken or fried fish have an increased risk of heart disease and death, researchers report.

The findings, published in The BMJ, showed that after taking into account other potentially influential factors such as lifestyle and overall diet quality, regularly eating fried foods was associated with a higher risk of death from any cause, and, in particular with heart-related death.

Spanish fried food lovers regularly use olive oil for their frying, and more often they cook their fried foods in their own kitchens, Bao explained. "A notable thing is when we fry at home, we don't reuse the oil many times".

The good news is the research did not find any evidence linking fried food with a higher risk of cancer.

One or more serving of fried chicken a day was linked to a 13% higher risk of death from any cause.

Fish can be helpful for cardiovascular diseases, so he expected a lower association between fried fish and mortality than the one seen in the study. Previous studies that investigated the health effects of fried food did not see differences in consequences between genders.

The rise in risk could be down to a number of reasons, according to the study. For example, the type of oil used for frying, as some are worse for you than others.

The study notes that up to a third of Americans eat fast food every day.

But other factors could play a role as well, Bao said.

Bao believes portion control and reducing how often we indulge in fried food can be steps toward protecting our health.
