Twenty-three people have died worldwide due to airbag inflator problems.

Toyota models that are to be recalled include the 2010 through 2016 4Runner, the 2010 through 2013 Corolla and Matrix, and the 2011 through 2014 Sienna.

It's the next step in what has been one of the biggest automotive recalls in US history, reported the AP.

The Takata airbag recall affects more than 100 million vehicles and almost 20 automotive brands around the world.

Last week, United States automaker Ford recalled 953,000 vehicles to address Takata airbag problems.

Affected airbags were made with the chemical ammonium nitrate and the airbags were prone to exploding once deployed. The inflators can "explode with too much force and hurl shrapnel into drivers and passengers", according to the AP. In areas of high heat and humidity, the risk of rupture may arise between 6 and 9 years.

Toyota announced it will replace the inflators or entire air bags on 1.7 vehicles in North America, 1.3 million of which are in the U.S, reported Fortune.

Takata was forced to file for bankruptcy protection in June 2017 before the firm was acquired by Key Safety Systems in April 2018.

Other automakers are scheduled to replace 10 million Takata airbags beginning this month.

They cover 37 million vehicles and about 50 million inflators in the US.

To date, 21 deaths have been reported in Honda Motor Co vehicles and two in Ford vehicles.

The NHSTA has a VIN lookup that will let vehicle owners know if their auto has been recalled for any reason, including whether it is part of the Takata recall.

Owners can check to see if their vehicles have been recalled by going to https://www.toyota.com/recall or https://www.airbagrecall.com and keying license plate or vehicle identification numbers.
