Imagine the opposite scenario to What Women Want. "She was able to hear me when I spoke to her", says ear, nose, and throat specialist Dr. Lin Xiaoqing, "but when a young male patient walked in, she couldn't hear him at all".

This isn't a selective hearing joke - Chen, from Xiamen in China, woke up one day and she was unable to hear her boyfriend when he spoke - or any men, as it turned out.

The woman, who is going only by her surname Chen, reportedly went to the Qianpu Hospital to meet with a specialist who discovered the unusual predicament.

A woman now known as Ms. Chen has been diagnosed with a rare hearing condition. Aside from being unable to hear the low-frequency voices of men, those suffering from the condition may not be able to hear things like cars driving by, which could put them in danger.

It is also extremely uncommon.

The site says an estimated 3,000 people in the US are affected - so just one out of every 12,000 cases of hearing loss. And while that might seem enviable to some, the hearing loss could carry serious medical repercussions.

If you haven't heard of it (and we hadn't either) it's called reverse-sloping hearing loss because of the shape of a hearing test audiogram of those who can't hear low frequencies - it looks the opposite of a ski slope, starting in the lower-left-hand corner and sloping upward steeply. That can include the voices of women and children, which tend to be higher pitched than male voices.

Chen said she'd been putting her body under a lot of pressure and not looking after herself recently.

Although there are a number of causes of reverse-slope hearing losses, the most common causes are genetic abnormalities, Wolfram syndrome and Mondini dysplasia.

According to reports, Chen had experience ringing in the ear and vomiting the night before and her doctors attributed it to stress and a lack of sleep.

It has been linked to genetics and can be triggered by certain diseases (for example, Ménière's disease) and viral infections.
