White dwarf stars observed slowly crystallising and turning into solid spheres

Dr. Trembley mentioned that no other direct evidence has ever been discovered that white dwarfs crystallize ( the process of turning solid from liquid).

These ultra-dense remnants still emit thermal radiation as they cool, and are visible to astronomers as rather faint objects.

However, the death of a red dwarf and its subsequent transformation into a white dwarf does not mark the end of its evolutionary journey.

Tremblay said their studies suggested that white dwarfs stop their cooling by turning from liquid to almost 99 per cent solid over about 1.5 billion years.

The core will become a tiny white dwarf star. They are the rest of the centers of red goliaths after these colossal stars have passed on and shed their external layers and are always cooling as they discharge their accumulated warmth through the span of billions of years.

In addition to that, fifty years ago it was predicted that a number of white dwarfs would be observed certain luminosities and colors due to crystallization.

The heat released during this crystallisation process, which lasts several billion years, seemingly slows down the evolution of the white dwarfs: the dead stars stop dimming and, as a result, appear up to two billion years younger than they actually are.

The core of a star is made up of liquid oxygen and carbon. The crystallization of white dwarfs is similar to how water turns into ice only that the cosmic process involve higher temperatures.

Massive stars in the Universe die out with a great explosion that we call Supernova.

They identified a pile-up, an excess in the number of stars at specific colours and luminosities that do not correspond to any single mass or age.

The researchers analyzed a whopping 15,109 white dwarfs and mapped their luminosities and colors and saw a odd group of data points sticking out.

Astronomers chose 15,000 white dwarf candidates within around 300 light years of Earth from perceptions made by the Gaia satellite and broke down information on the stars' luminosities and colors. But that's not what the Gaia data show.

"We will now have to develop better crystallisation models to get more accurate estimates of the ages of these systems".

Our sun is going to turn into a crystal sphere - although we won't be around to see it, as it'll happen in ten billion years.

"All white dwarfs will crystallize at some point in their evolution, although more massive white dwarfs go through the process sooner".

'This means that billions of white dwarfs in our galaxy have already completed the process and are essentially crystal spheres in the sky. Our sun is also expected to end its life in the same manner, crystallizing like a jewel in about 10 billion years.

There are billions of white dwarves out there that have already gone through this process, astral remnants haunting our galaxy like weird crystal ghosts.
