The Division 2 Is Launching on Epic Games Store, Not Steam

The Division 2 The Division 2 is choosing to launch on Epic Store instead of Steam

Epic Games initially made waves with the launch of their Game Store by ensuring developers that they'd get a much better revenue split (88-12) than they would with Steam (70-30).

Furthermore, it looks like Ubisoft decide to drop Steam this time and they will be releasing their games through uPlay and the recently released Epic Games Store. The only way to get the game digitally on PC is either through the Ubisoft Store or the Epic Games store.

"We entrust Epic to deliver a smooth journey for our fans, from preordering the game and enjoying our Beta to the launch of Tom Clancy's The Division 2 on March 15", Ubisoft vice president of partnerships Chris Early said in the announcement.

The Ubisoft-Epic partnership is also notable because it's a direct blow to Valve's Steam marketplace, which has always been the dominant storefront in the PC gaming space.

Epic Games" ever-popular "Support-A-Creator' program in Fortnite: Battle Royale is set to be available in Ubisoft's 'The Division 2'. Epic Games also said in a statement that it "will also partner [with Ubisoft] on additional select titles to be announced during the coming year". If The Division 2 proves as popular, that's a significant cut to income for Valve when the game launches on March 15.

While Ubisoft didn't go into further detail on its reasoning for eschewing Steam in this case, Epic's more generous revenue-sharing scheme likely played an outsized role.

Ubisoft's support of Epic's storefront is a bold move. The two companies also say that they "will work to integrate key components" of both Uplay and Epic's own online services. Ubisoft fully supports Epic and their third-party distribution model, which is in the long-term, beneficial for publishers both large and indie and the video games industry. Speaking with Polygon via email after the announcement, a Ubisoft representative said the following: "We have no plans now on releasing Tom Clancy's The Division 2 on Steam".
