Showdown looms as UK lawmakers clash over May's Brexit deal

British Prime Minister Theresa May is rapidly losing control over her Brexit strategy after the government suffered a pair of humiliating defeats in the House of Commons this week that have opened the door to a range of possibilities, including another referendum on Brexit.

Theresa May suffered a second House of Commons defeat within 24 hours as MPs moved to force the prime minister to reveal her Brexit plan B sooner, if her European Union divorce deal is rejected next week.

Around 20 Tory MPs defied the government and backed the two motions this week and at least 40 hard-Brexit Tories have vowed to vote against the deal on Tuesday.

But Mr Bercow stood by his decision to allow a vote on the amendment - which was ultimately approved by 308 votes to 297, majority 11 - amid personal criticism and calls for him to go from Tory MPs during more than 60 minutes of points of order.

"Obviously, the next thing to do immediately after that is for there to be a vote of confidence in the government", he told BBC Radio 4.

May, who is struggling to win approval for her Brexit plan, previously had 21 days to report back to the Commons in the event of a defeat next Tuesday.

After a two week Christmas recess, United Kingdom parliamentarians resumed hostilities on Brexit, with 20 Conservative MPs joining forces with the opposition Labour party and supporting an amendment to the May government's Finance Bill demanding that a "no deal" Brexit be ruled out.

The Prime Minister has continually said her terms represent a "good deal" and that no-deal exit is not her preferred outcome.

Barry Gardiner, the opposition Labour Party's shadow worldwide trade secretary, said earlier his party will table a no confidence motion in the government if - as expected - Parliament votes down Prime Minister Theresa May's Brexit deal.

It also said it would accept a change to its Brexit plans which, if passed, would mean that parliament would have the chance to express its disapproval about entering the backstop, if the need to do so arose, without compromising the deal.

"I think he stepped way over the mark out today he's broken with parliamentary precedent".

"When I became an MP three years ago I was determined that I would not become part of the establishment".

When word got round about Mr Bercow's decision, incandescent rage spread through the Government and along the Conservative benches. But the deal has run into fierce opposition among MPs, particularly from a group of Ms. "I've been in contact with European leaders...about MPs' (members of parliament) concerns".

The vote, which saw 20 legislators from Mrs May's Conservative Party rebel and side with the Opposition, indicates that a majority in Parliament opposes leaving the European Union without an agreement and will try to stop it happening.

Leader of the Commons Andrea Leadsom challenged Bercow to publish any advice he had received from his clerks - prompting an eruption from Labour MPs who pointed out the government's own attempts to keep the legal advice it had received on Brexit private. "That is why we are taking every opportunity possible in parliament to prevent no deal", Corbyn said, cited by the Guardian.
