NYC Mayor Unveils "Health Care For All" Plan

Mayor Bill de Blasio announced on Tuesday health care coverage for all New Yorkers Mayor Bill de Blasio announced on Tuesday health care coverage for all New Yorkers

Not only will NY be a sanctuary city, Mayor de Blasio will now seek $100 million in new spending to provide full comprehensive healthcare for all, including its undocumented immigrants.

During his presser on Tuesday, de Blasio said he will continue to support statewide and national efforts to move toward single-payer, and characterized NYC Care as an immediate solution for hundreds of thousands of uninsured New York City residents.

The new program, called NYC Care, will be available to everyone in Manhattan and its five boroughs, regardless of existing medical conditions, ability to pay or immigration status, de Blassio says.

De Blasio's wife, Chirlane McCray, who started a mental health program, ThriveNYC, for city residents, praised NYC Care for increasing access to mental health services.

The program is meant to reach an estimated 600,000 city residents now without health insurance.

The city plans to begin improving MetroPlus now, and to expand access for ineligible New Yorkers starting this summer. We'll put the money in it to make it work.

'NYC already has a public option, ' he tweeted. "We now have in New York City something that we can build on; we have a public [health care] option that we are ready to make much bigger". There are approximately 600,000 New Yorkers without health care coverage. He said that the undocumented often go to the ER for many health issues, regardless of severity, because they will not be asked for health documentation. The mayor is trying to do what some of his predecessors attempted-shift patients away from the emergency room and into primary care, or clinics.

Mayor Bill de Blasio rolled out legislation guaranteeing private-sector employees two weeks of paid vacation every year. When you get people in front of a physician in a timely manner, when you avoid hospitalizations and intensive treatments, you cut out a staggering expense: Those savings are projected to help cover NYC Care.

And now de Blasio plans to further embrace illegal immigrants by providing them with free health care on the taxpayers' dime.

He's also repeatedly spoken out against the dangers sanctuary cities pose to USA citizens when illegal immigrant criminals are protected.

Mitchell Katz, MD, president and CEO of NYC Health and Hospitals, the city's public healthcare network, noted that prescription drugs are one thing most people are anxious about being able to afford, but "under this program, pharmaceutical costs are covered".

Otherwise, the city's estimate averages out to $160 per person in medical costs per year.

"Health care is a right, not a privilege reserved for those who can afford it", de Blasio said in a statement on Tuesday.

New Yorkers will be able to access the program through the city's website or by calling 311, and tax increases will not be necessary to fund it, the mayor said.
