Kidnappers demand $10M ransom in cryptocurrency for millionaire's wife

Kidnappers in Norway demand $10M Monero ransom for millionaire's wife After the demand for ransom in monero – police urge family not to pay

The wife of one of Norway's richest men has been missing for months and her kidnappers have demanded a ransom, police have revealed.

"The reason for us to go public with this case now is that, despite a broad and extensive investigation, we need more information", chief police investigator Tommy Broeske told a news conference.

'As the case now stands, police have advised the family not to settle the claim.

Tom Hagen's net worth was estimated at around $200 million by Norway's financial magazine Kapital, which ranked him the 172nd wealthiest person in the country.

To add on, since the disappearance of Falkevik Hagen, the police have not found any evidence with respect to her safety, according to the reports.

68-year-old Anne-Elisabeth Falkevik disappeared on October 31.

The ransom payment was requested in the cryptocurrency monero to make it harder to trace a transaction, dailies Aftenposten and VG reported.

Police have received no proof that the woman is alive "but we haven't received any indication that she isn't alive either", Brøske said.

Investigators said they had no suspects at this stage.

Broadcaster NRK said the ransom had been demanded in an equivalent amount of the cryptocurrency Monero - a digital currency similar to Bitcoin.

Family lawyer, Svein Holden, told reporters: 'The family sees this as a cruel and inhumane act. "It is demanding and exhausting to be in such a situation over a long period of time", he said.

It said Mrs Hagen appeared to have been abducted from the bathroom of her home and that there had been "limited dialogue" with the alleged kidnappers over the internet.

Norwegian police confirmed that "a woman in her late 60s is believed to have been kidnapped from her home in Lorenskog", around 20 kilometres (12 miles) from Oslo, but did not disclose her identity. Mr Broeske said they were working with Europol and Interpol on the case.
