France to crack down on unauthorized 'yellow vest' protests: PM

Yellow Vest France to crack down on unauthorized 'yellow vest' protests: PM
Noah Ferguson | 10 January, 2019, 04:28

In footage uploaded on to the internet and viewed millions of times, the 37-year-old is seen taking part in the weekend marches and turning violent as he comes up against a police line blocking the route.

Last Saturday, protesters used a construction vehicle to smash open the doors of the building housing the ministry of government spokesman Benjamin Griveaux.

He said the government would support a new law to punish the organisers of unauthorised protests, banning known troublemakers from taking part and arresting demonstrators who turn up wearing masks to hide their identities.

On Tuesday, 8,052 people had pledged more than 117,000 euros on the Leetchi website for Christophe Dettinger, known as "The Gypsy From Massy" during his days in the ring, before the collection was declared "finished".

The twice national light-heavyweight champion was caught on camera jumping over the railings of a pedestrian bridge blocked by baton-wielding police before swinging blows at two officers, forcing them to retreat.

The former boxer, who now works as a public servant at a town hall south of Paris, described himself in a video posted on YouTube on Sunday as an "ordinary citizen" acting out of anger with what he called the "repressive tactics" of the police.

About 200 protesters, including trade union members and participants in the yellow vest movement, gathered Wednesday in Creteil, a Paris suburb as Macron visited a handball facility dedicated to handball gymnasium.

Since the yellow vest demonstrations began, 5,600 people have been arrested and more than 1,000 were sentenced to prison, said Philippe.

Images of a policeman striking several protesters in the southern city of Toulon on Saturday also risk fanning the flames.

While the number of protesters has dwindled since the earliest demonstrations, a smaller but increasingly radical core seem determined to push on.

Budget Minister Gerald Darmanin has sought to distinguish genuine protesters, who want lower taxes and more help for low-income families, from those "who are in the business of ultra-violence".

"There is a minority of our citizens who believe that violence is justified, give money for violence", Labor Minister Muriel Penicaud told CNews television.

The Yellow Vest protests, which started as a reaction to fuel tax hikes and evolved into a protest against French President Emmanuel Macron, have continued despite the government's call for them to halt. There was a recent statement by two ministers from the Italian government who do not hide their support [for the yellow vest movement]...

However, this was the case of Luigi Di Maio, the Italian deputy prime minister and minister of labour.
