AMD Unveils Third-Gen Ryzen CPUs, Available Mid

AMD Launches Next Radeon VII GPU, the World's First 7nm GPU AMD Unveils Radeon VII, Says it Outperforms Nvidia 2080 RTX

"AMD Radeon VII is the highest-performance gaming graphics card we ever created", said Scott Herkelman, corporate vice president and general manager, Radeon Technologies Group at AMD.

It's not clear if we'll see any downstream Radeon VII products. At $699, AMD's high-end GPU will also be more expensive than the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080, which is now available at $349.

AMD has also revealed some initial benchmarks in which the AMD Radeon VII is 35% faster than Radeon RX Vega 64 in Battlefield 5, 25% faster in Fortnite and 42% faster in Strange Brigade. Aside from having the jump on 7nm for desktops, AMD CEO, Lisa Su, also announced that 3rd Gen Ryzen processors will be the first in the world to support PCIe 4.0. It provides up to 27 percent higher performance in the popular open source 3D creation application Blender, up to 27 percent higher performance in the professional video editing, color correction and visual effects application DaVinci Resolve 15, and up to 62 percent higher performance in the OpenCL LuxMark compute benchmark compared to the AMD Radeon RX Vega 64 graphics card. The recent launch of the RTX 2060 demonstrated that Nvidia's Turing architecture can hit Vega 64 where it hurts, with that $350 GPU delivering 95 percent of Vega 64 performance. The Vega 10 is built on GlobalFoundries' 14nm process; the Vega 20 is built on TSMC's 7nm process. With price parity against the RTX 2080, AMD is clearly angling to challenge that chip, but we won't know how effective that challenge will be until we have hardware in-house.

But still, a new, high-performance 7nm Vega GPU is a surprise given that AMD had previously stated it wasn't even considering the shrunken chip for a gaming release.

AMD's early CES 2019 keynote was mostly a rehash of other points the company has addressed already at the event, including its new 12nm Ryzen Mobile parts and the company's general collaboration with Microsoft and others in the gaming and creative industries.

Another big of good news is Ryzen 3rd Generation is sticking to the same AM4 socket, so its new CPUs will work with existing 300 and 400-series AMD motherboards.
