Patients will be able to switch to a "digital first" provider from their existing GP and have access to a "digital first primary care offer" such as online or video consultations by 2022-23, the NHS's Long-Term Plan has revealed.
Cancer charities gave the plans a cautious welcome.
Nuffield Trust chief executive Nigel Edwards said the NHS's system of workforce planning has "failed", and that it needs "deep reform". Despite the 2bn increase to the existing £12bn a year now spent on mental health services in England, the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPS) previously expressed concern that this figure is only half what is needed for the NHS to put spending more on par with that of physical health.

Health and Social Care Secretary Matt Hancock said: "Whether it's treating ever more people in their communities, using the latest technology to tackle preventable diseases, or giving every baby the very best start in life - this Government has given the NHS the multi-billion pound investment needed to nurture and safeguard our nation's health service for generations to come". "And while commitments for the NHS to do more to promote public health are welcome, cuts to local government funding for public health services underline the need for a more consistent approach across government to the population's health". We are especially pleased to see more support for young people's mental health where additional resources for core services and those that support the transition to adult services are much needed.
The Long Term Plan is only tackling half the issue of patient access to innovative treatments and we believe overlooking the AAP will not be conducive to ensuring patients receive quicker access to the best treatments now on the market.
It includes 10 priorities and 10 milestones for digital healthcare, with the broad promise that at the end of the next decade, there will be "an NHS where digital access to services is widespread".
About two million more people who suffer anxiety, depression or other problems can expect to receive help over the next decade.
"That would leave the NHS over £1bn short, despite the extra funding".
Mental health experts have applauded the commitment to closing the care gap. "There is an urgent need to act on this, and we look forward to working with NHS England to ensure better IT connectivity between optical practices and other parts of the NHS", Ms Alderman concluded. This will more or less cost the £20bn the government has promised.
Over the next 10 years, the NHS aims to have a universal place for people to go to when they're in crisis - the 111 helpline - which will operate on a 24/7 basis. The move has been criticised by some mental health campaigners - journalist Hannah Jane Parkinson tweeted: "This is not mental health care". This is supported by agreed measures to manage branded health service medicines through the new statutory and voluntary pricing and access schemes.
We all have an emotional connection to it, our own family story, and we all owe an enormous debt of gratitude to the people who make the NHS what it is, and work so hard, especially during the winter months when the pressures are greatest.
'However, it is vital that this is done in a way that minimises disruption for hard pressed Global Positioning System and their practices and enables progress to be made in a way that protects the ability of Global Positioning System to deliver care in the way that best meets the needs of their local communities'.
