A woman in Arizona who has been in a vegetative state in a hospital for over 10 years has given birth to a child.

"Bill Timmons, longtime Chief Executive Officer of Hacienda HealthCare, has terminated his employment from the company effective immediately", a Tuesday statement from the facility to HuffPost reads.

Hacienda HealthCare operates the long-term care facility for the developmentally disabled where the woman gave birth on December 29 to a baby boy, according to earlier reporting by KPHO, which also revealed that the Native American woman has been in a vegetative state for 14 years after a near-drowning.

Part of the investigation is focused on the possibility of multiple sexual assaults on the woman, including assaults on different parts of the body.

On Dec. 29, with help from one of the facility's nurses, the patient gave birth to a healthy baby boy, KPHO reported.

A Hacienda HealthCare spokesman said the organisation was co-operating with authorities.

The woman had been in a vegetative state for more than a decade (file picture).

"From what I've been told, she was moaning", a source told Phoenix CBS affiliate KPHO.

"As an organization, Hacienda HealthCare stands fully committed to getting to the truth of what, for us, represents an unprecedented matter", David Leibowitz, spokesman for Hacienda HealthCare, said in a statement to the Washington Post.

Another statement said Hacienda is "already conducting a comprehensive internal review of our processes, protocols, and people to ensure that every single Hacienda resident is as safe and well cared for as possible".

Police have made no arrests so far and it remains unclear if they have identified any suspects yet in their investigation.

Gov. Doug Ducey's office released a statement saying the reports are "deeply troubling". Hacienda was given a year to fix the "defects" in staff training and staff treatment of patients or be removed from the Medicare roster.

The facility provides intermediate care for patients with intellectual disabilities. In 2013, a male employee was found to have made sexually explicit remarks to patients, though no physical or sexual abuse allegations were made and the employee was sacked.
