Google's Messages app now getting spam protection

Google started rolling out Spam Protection feature to Android Messages app Messages’ Spam Protection feature is rolling out for some users

That new feature to work, you must regularly connect your smartphone to the Internet, because Google has encrypted the phone numbers of people who are spamming and advertising, though the difference is not great. Spam Protection, on the other hand, requires less input from the user. In that regard, this is different to spam reports manually sent to Google, which include the full message sent by the spammer.

A number of users were noticing a prompt called "New!" The latest addition to the app is spam protection, though it comes with some caveats.

Following the call screening feature Google introduced to Pixel 3 phones earlier this year, similar functionality is now being implemented in Android Messages in the form of a new spam protection filter. However, Google says it doesn't save your phone number or the content of texts.

Google still hasn't made anything official regarding the new spam protection feature.

But in the coming weeks, the service could be shifted to "messages.google.com", the report said, citing an upcoming change to Chrome OS. Google notes that data collected from users is aimed at improving future spam detection. It'll take real-world tests to determine whether the feature works well, however, so hopefully the feature rolls out sooner rather than later to a lot more users.

Alternatively, you can toggle the feature on or off by tapping the overflow menu, Settings and then Advanced. In short, when you enable the option, some information is sent to Google (no surprises here), though it doesn't contain any personal information that can be used to identify you, nor the actual contents of the message itself.
