He died later that night at a New Mexico hospital, the second child fatality in USA immigration custody in under a month.

The officials said that medical workers had carried out new medical exams of nearly all the children in the care of the U.S. Border Patrol. He was hospitalised twice that day before dying, the agency said.

CBP said in a statement that it needs the help of other government agencies to provide healthcare.

Word spread through the impoverished village in the western highlands of Guatemala: Migrants traveling with a child are likely to make it past the Border Patrol and into the United States.

Immigration advocates and human rights groups sharply criticized CBP in the wake of Felipe's death.

Another Guatemalan child, 7-year-old Jakelin Caal, died in United States custody on December 8.

Speaker-designate Nancy Pelosi said Congress will investigate the two deaths to "ensure that no other child is left to such a fate".

"Moving forward, all children will receive more thorough hands on assessment at the earliest possible time post apprehension - whether or not the accompanying adult has asked for one", Nielsen said. "We need to budget for medical care and mental health care for children in our facilities".

Margaret Huang, executive director of Amnesty International USA, said the Trump administration's "policies of cruelty toward migrants and asylum seekers at the border must cease immediately before any more children are harmed".

Customs and Border Protection is part of the Department of Homeland Security. CBP officers and the Border Patrol remain on the job despite the shutdown.

The CBP chief called the young boy's death "a tragic loss". The agency said it has notified the DHS inspector general. Felipe was the second Guatemalan child to die in CBP's custody in three weeks.

Shortly before 3 p.m., the child was released from the hospital and prescribed amoxicillin and ibuprofen. Doctors noted the boy had a 103-degree fever and diagnosed him with a common cold before releasing him back to border patrol custody. That evening, Felipe started vomiting, and his father declined medical help because his son had been feeling better, CBP said.

With regard to the partnership with the CDC, McAleenan said the two agencies would coordinate "on the numbers of children in custody as well" - a suggestion that drew sharp criticism from Rep. Lou Correa, a member of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus from California and Chairman-elect of the House Homeland Security Oversight Subcommittee.

1pm: As he is about to be released from medical care, hospital staff notice he has a 103F (39.4C) fever.

With his father, he had traveled 2,000 miles from his home in Guatemala to reach the USA border, where the pair were apprehended by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents.

The head of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection says the recent deaths of two immigrant children are "an extraordinarily rare occurrence" that is "devastating" to the agency.

December 18: The boy and his father were first apprehended by border agents about three miles west of the Paso Del Norte Port of Entry in El Paso, Texas.

She'll be in El Paso on Friday and Yuma, Arizona, on Saturday, a DHS official said.

The youngster passed away at Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center in Alamogordo, New Mexico, on Christmas Eve after falling ill. She was revived by EMTs and taken to a hospital in El Paso, Texas, where she was found to be experiencing brain swelling and liver failure.
