Apple's high-end iPhones will be assembled at Foxconn's facility in Sriperumbudur town of Tamil Nadu.

Hon Hai, which already makes phones for Xiaomi Corp (小米) in India, is to invest 25 billion rupees (US$355.5 million) to expand the plant, including investment in iPhone production, Tamil Nadu Minister for Industrial Department M.C. Sampath said.

Apple's decision to manufacture iPhones in India likely stems from the ramifications of the ongoing trade war between the US and China, started by President Donald Trump earlier this year. Moreover, the source also claimed that Foxconn is planning to assemble iPhones in India.

The Hindu recently reported it, wherein the newspaper underlined that Foxconn plant would be initiating the production of several iPhones. In all probability Apple would look at exporting units made locally as cost-sensitive India is not yet a major market for it.

According to a survey conducted in the United States by the Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP), more smartphone users switched from Android ecosystem to the iOS this year than past two years.

This is a substantial 33 percent jump in the number of Android users who switched to iOS after the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus were launched past year, and a whopping 45 percent increase when compared to Android switchers in the month after the launch of iPhone X.

Apple did not immediately respond to a Fortune request for comment on the report.

According to the report, the iPhone XR did better than the iPhone X, iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus in terms of sales that accounted for Android switchers.

Complete details about Apple's deal with Foxconn are not yet clear.

It is not known if any of the iPhone assembly is being moved from existing Foxconn factories in China and elsewhere. Additionally, it is also not confirmed whether the production will be confined to assembly or include some component production in the country.
