The moon will still appear beautifully full enough on the solstice, even it's not as rare as if it were officially full.

The Weather Network is predicting a longer, colder, winter this year and today will definitely turn more winter-like this afternoon with snow and blowing snow, driven by northerly winds gusting to 50 km/h.

CHINA: The Winter solstice marks the end of the harvest season and is celebrated with family gatherings and a big meal, including rice balls called tang yuan.

If you want to be super-precise in your observations, the exact time of the 2018 winter solstice will be 22:23 Universal Time.

At this time, the Earth's North Pole is pointing away from the sun (which is why it is so much colder in the Northern hemisphere).

However, most people concentrate on the whole solstice day, which has been recognised by holidays and festivals in many cultures all over the world.

Today is the shortest day of the year, also known as the winter solstice. According to EarthSky, the last time the winter solstice and full moon occurred within a day of each other was in 2010, and the next time will be in 2029. When the sun sets on the shortest day of the year, the sun's rays align with Stonehenge's central Altar stone and Slaughter stone, which may have had spiritual significance to the people who built the monument, Live Science reported in 2013.

So what's going on with this full moon?

The American Meteor Society says at the peak, there should be about 11 sporadic meteors per hour just before dawn.

Experts reckon the best time to see the shooting stars will be in the early hours of Saturday morning, when it's darkest. Illumination of 98 percent or more appears as a full moon.
