This is the same process of forming images, which was used in the mission's Curiosity Rover, which first made a lot of overlapping pictures, and then they are stapled together.

For photos of the machine visible to the scientific instruments, the rod of weather sensors and antenna, UHF, reported on the official website of NASA.

Since landing on Mars on November 26, NASA's InSight lander has been settling in and taking photos. This image is also a mosaic, made up of 52 individual images sent by InSight.

The next few weeks will be spent looking for the flawless spot to place InSight's instruments.

Those instruments include a self-burrowing heat probe and a suite of incredibly sensitive seismometers, both of which must be placed directly on the red dirt by InSight's arm.

"The near-absence of rocks, hills and holes means it'll be extremely safe for our instruments", said InSight's Principal Investigator Bruce Banerdt of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL).

"This might seem like a pretty plain piece of ground if it weren't on Mars, but we're glad to see that", Banerdt added.

Mars' Elysium Planitia region (which sits just north of the equator) was picked exactly because of its mostly rock-free terrain. But InSight's landing spot is as good as it gets. The spacecraft sits in what appears to be a almost rock-free "hollow" - a depression created by a meteor impact that later filled with sand. InSight will dig some 16 feet (five meters) below where it is situated with its heat-flow-probe. It gives a detailed look at the lander's solar panels, as well as all the advanced surface mapping and analysis instruments it has onboard.

JPL manages InSight for NASA's Science Mission Directorate.

"The InSight lander acts like a giant ear", said Tom Pike, InSight science team member and sensor designer at Imperial College London. DLR provided the Heat Flow and Physical Properties Package (HP) instrument, with significant contributions from the Space Research Center (CBK) of the Polish Academy of Sciences and Astronika in Poland.
